Podcast Interview • What’s the Difference between Traditional Tantra and Neo-Tantra?

August 12, 2020 //  by Kara-Leah Grant

Traditional Tantra versus Neo-Tantra: is there a difference?

Well yeah! A huge difference! And it was such a delight to speak to Nikki Rhodes about this difference in an interview on her podcast The Secrets of Spiritual Sex.

She calls me ‘a lifelong student of non-dualistic Tantra’, which isn’t exactly true. I only committed to tantra practice in 2015, and the study of it in 2018. Yet I knew what she’s hinting at – the way I’ve lived has been, for so long, in a Tantrik manner…

We talk about exactly what is traditional Tantra and why we get it so confused with the modern movement of neo-Tantra. Much of my understanding of this I owe to my teacher Christopher Hareesh Wallis. He’s an exceptional scholar (and practitioner) that details this confusion in his amazing book Tantra Illuminated. Christopher is the one I learned about the nature of “toxic relationships” from too – there’s more detail in the podcast on that.

Nikki says “This episode unpacks what it means to truly live life as a Tantrika and why it is so much more than cuddle-puddles and lingam massage. Smashing societal conditioning and pre-programmed patterns of relating, living and loving, this episode is a game-changer for those deep into the quest for Truth within.

…A little something to smash open your Tuesday and get you inspired to take an honest look at how you show up in your relationship.”

When the Guru says No, Go Away, You are Not a Student, and Definitely Not a Teacher

Let the words from the guru pierce your heart. This is what I do. Or rather, it’s how I orientate to this email from the guru. From the teacher. I read it again, taking time, letting each word, and the energy behind it, penetrate my depths. Time slows down. The rain sounds louder. I stare …

Dance Floor Etiquette • The NZ Spirit Festival Community Speaks

Festival Season officially kicked off in early November with Spring Festival in Pukehina, and the dance floor was WILD, with epic sets from DJ Blase, DJ Jimmy Fresh and DJ Kauri, and all kinds of dance floor etiquette enacted, and transgressed. When I published an article after that event, Shenanigans on the Dance Floor • …
